Now Open, Rush's New Tower Will Enhance Education
| The Rush Transformation isn’t only improving the patient experience—it’s enhancing the learning environment for Rush University students as well. By transforming the Medical Center’s facilities and systems to center around providing the best possible care for our patients, Rush is also transforming its teaching environment to offer the best clinical education for our students. |
Rush opened its new Tower hospital facility on Monday, Jan. 9. In addition to enhancing quality of patient care, the Tower will be a state-of-the-art classroom for Rush's nursing students. |
Rush’s emphasis on clinical, hands-on experience is evident in the new hospital’s patient care units, where the nursing stations are in clear view of the patient rooms and provide a spacious area for students to confer with teacher-practitioners and other medical staff about current cases. Conference rooms are located within close proximity to the station, offering a convenient, spontaneous classroom for more in-depth discussion of a topic or procedure.
Rush Remembers, Celebrates Emeritus Dean Christman
![]() |
A pioneer of the practitioner-teacher model for nursing education, a champion of advanced clinical degrees for nurses and the nation’s first male dean of a school of nursing, LUTHER CHRISTMAN, PhD, RN, emeritus dean of Rush University College of Nursing, died June 7, 2011. Christman was Rush University College of Nursing’s first dean and the vice president for nursing affairs at then-Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center from 1972 until his retirement in 1987. |
At Rush, Christman shaped the field of nursing by implementing the Rush Model for Nursing, which included the merging of nursing education and practice, as well as primary nursing as a means to improve patient care.
Christman also helped establish the National Male Nurse Association (now the American Assembly for Men in Nursing), was honored with the first Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award from Sigma Theta Tau international nursing honorary society and was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame.
Gifts in Christman’s memory can be directed to the Dorothy and Luther Christman Endowed Scholarship Fund for Nursing by calling Lisa Gerberding in the Office of Philanthropy at (312) 563-3164 or by visiting www.rush.edu/giveonline.
