PHYLLIS MUNTER BALK, 1951, of Huntley, Ill., died May 4, 2011, at the age of 81. During her career, Balk worked as an occupational health nurse for Deere & Company in Moline, Ill., as a clinic head nurse and emergency head nurse at Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital and as an occupational health nurse with Manufacturer’s Hanover Bank (now part of Chase). Well known for her activism and volunteerism, Balk worked with the Girl Scouts and Chicago’s Beacon House, helped foreign immigrants settle in the U.S. and led a highly publicized public protest to save New York City’s Hunter College High School, where she served as PTA president, from closure due to budget cuts. Balk was also a member of the Golden Lamp Society, the giving society for Rush University College of Nursing. Her husband, journalist Alfred Balk, predeceased her in 2010. She is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren.
